USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) and USS Providence (CLG-6) at Yokosuka, Japan, 1964. Oklahoma City relieved Providence as the flagship of the U.S. 7th Fleet.

On the inboard side is the destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DD-931) and outboard is USS Blandy (DD-943). On the north side of the pier is the former U.S. Army N-3 type port repair ship Madison Jordan Manchester (ex USS Hydra (AK-82)) which was also to be scrapped. Four more discarded destroyers are in the background. They also were to be scrapped.

On this day in 1940, HMS Wakeful is lost off Belgium after rescuing soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force as part of Operation Dynamo. 690 soldiers & sailors are lost. HMS GRAFTON picked up survivors but was also lost with another 14 men killed.

In 1914 the US Navy sent all her five C Class submarines and the tender USS Severn to the Panama Canal for its defence. On the 2nd pic you can see them submerged in one of the locks.



 

SS Antlantic Coveyer packed with Harrier jets on the way to the South Atlantic, during the Falklands war 1982. 40 years ago today she was hit by Exocet missiles, and later sunk, depriving the troops on shore of important heavy lift helicopters, apart from one survivor.

On this day in 1941, Fairey Swordfish aircraft from from 820 NAS, HMS Ark Royal attacked the German Battleship, Bismarck, with torpedoes.The attack damaged Bismarck’s rudder severely affecting manoeuvrability, allowing the Royal Navy surface units to engage and finish the job the next day.

Lots of work is being undertaken to get HMS Scott ready for another record breaking deployment. Critical systems are being overhauled, and the hull and upper deck preserved. HMS Scott is an ocean survey vessel of the Royal Navy, and the only vessel of her class. She is the third Royal Navy ship to carry the name, and the second to be named after the Antarctic explorer, Robert Falcon Scott. She was ordered to replace the survey ship HMS Hecla.
