The powerful elegance of North Carolina-class battleship USS Washington (BB-56) churns through the Pacific after returning to the following repairs in the spring of 1944. She would resume her position as Admiral Willis Lee's flagship in June after missing more than three months of the war; a collision with Indiana (BB-58) in February had sent her home for a new bow, opening up a brief period where Washington's sister North Carolina (BB-55) hosted Admiral Lee.
