On this day in 1777, Captain Cook in HMS Resoluttion discovered what is the world's largest coral atoll in the Pacific, which he named Christmas Island. 180 years later in 1957 HMS RESOLUTION was the Naval Party on the island overseeing the Op GRAPPLE British Nuclear tests.
