In 1916, successive tsunami-like waves battered USS Memphis while anchored near Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The crushing waves slammed the ship into the harbour bottom several times, causing substantial damage to the ship.
Memphis being stripped of supplies and equipment, shortly after being wrecked.
