On this day in 1918, MS Hood was launched on the Clyde. At the time the most powerful and largest warship in the world and at 860ft long she was only 70 ft shorter than the modern Royal Navy aircraft carriers HMS QNLZ and HMS PWLS.

The floating crane ship, US Crane Ship No.1, sitting in dry dock on 3 October 1925. The crane ship was undergoing repairs and refit at the Boston Navy Yard. The ship still carries her former name "Kearsarge" on her stern. Originally the battleship USS Kearsarge (BB-5) pre-dreadnought.

Today in 1999, HMS Bangor was commissioned. She was the last RN Ship to be accepted in the 20th Century. Of the 12 RN Sandown Class Minehunters built only BANGOR remains in service as mine-hunting moves towards autonomous vessels from mother ships.
