HMS Spey is currently conducting the UK’s 12th surveillance patrol since 2018 in support of UN sanctions against North Korea. This is to prevent imports of materials for use in weapons of mass destruction including by illicit ship-to-ship transfers. Photo: @HNlEHupY4Nr6hRM outbound from Yokosuka after a short period in dry dock. In response to illegal maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers of North Korean-flagged vessels, which are prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions, HMS Spey conducted a vigilant surveillance activity in the waters around Japan from mid to late June.

Amphib Boxer is soon to be sidelined again for 18 months of maintenance. Although the Navy says it will be able to fix the amphibious assault ship Boxer’s (LHD-4) rudder issues pier side, the service is now planning for the problem-ridden ship to be docked for at least 18 months starting next spring. The service announced its intentions on the government’s contracting website, SAM.gov, in a May 17 solicitation seeking out contractors capable of conducting a maintenance availability on Boxer beginning in April 2025 and scheduled to end in October 2026.

HMS Tamar (Center) rafted up with submarine tender USS Emory S Land and HMAS Leeuwin in Cairns to test logistic support capabilities. The Emory S Land is primarily designed to provide stores, fuel and engineering support to submarines but could potentially do the same for surface ships in the Pacific region.

German U-Boat U 534 was raised from the sea bed in 1996, and the wreck and the artefacts, including an enigma machine, were saved. U-534 was attacked and sunk by two Royal Air Force Liberator bombers in the Kattegat sea between Denmark and Sweden on 5 May 1945. Discovered by a Danish wreck diver in 1986 and raised from the seabed by a Dutch salvage company in 1993, she later was moved to Birkenhead, England, where she became a star exhibit at the Warship Preservation Trust’s Birkenhead Docks Museum.
Valiant Shield (VS) 2024 conducted a sinking exercise (SINKEX) with the environmentally clean decommissioned hulk of the Austin-class amphibious transport dock, ex-USS Cleveland (LPD-7) more than 40 nautical miles from land in the North Pacific Ocean. A SINKEX generally involves air, surface, and undersea military units conducting live-fire training against a physical target.
