USS Russell (DDG 59) returned to Naval Base San Diego Oct. 15, following an eight-month deployment with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) to the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet areas of operation.

Belgian ship, BNS Louise-Marie will join the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), a permanent NATO maritime group. It will be responsible for patrols and will participate in two major exercises: Joint Warrior and Freezing Winds.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
