On this day in 1975, the cruiser USS Belknap and carrier USS John F. Kennedy collided, sparking a fire that caused the Belknap's aluminum superstructure to collapse. The incident contributed to the Navy's decision to revert to all-steel construction for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
