HNoMS Oslo was an Oslo-class frigate of the Royal Norwegian Navy. The frigate was launched on 17 January 1964, and commissioned on 29 January 1968. Oslo ran aground near Marstein Island on 24 January 1994. One officer was killed in the incident. The next day, on 25 January, she was taken under tow. However as the situation deteriorated, the tow was let go and the frigate sank.

On this day 80 years ago in 1942 the RoyalNavy destroyer HMS ELECTRA was sunk by the Japanese in the Battle of Java Sea, with the loss of 108 sailors. HMS Electra was escorting HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse when they were lost earlier that year saving 571 men.The wreck has been damaged by metal thieves.

 

HMS Nelson was the name ship of her class of two were the first battleships built to meet the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. Wikipedia Launched: 3 September 1925. Sold for scrap, 5 January 1949. Construction started: 28 December 1922 Out of service: 20 October 1947.

HMS Waterwitch, circa mid 1870,s. One of a unique group of 3 kind of experimental gunboats built for the RN. HMS Waterwitch was one of only three armoured gunboats built for the Royal Navy. Uniquely she was powered by Ruthven's "hydraulic propeller", making her the first ship to employ waterjets for propulsion.She was launched in 1866 and conducted comparative trials with her two sister ships. She was not employed operationally and was sold in 1890.

 

This Russian owned yacht named "Ragnar", was ransacked by the Norwegian Coast Guard, Police and Customs earlier today. It's owned by former KGB officier Vladimir Strzhalkovsky ; who is an old friend of Vladimir Putin. It looks like a boat used for cutting fiber cables. Fiber cables have been cut between the Norwegian mainland and the Norwegian territory of Svalbard which is way up North. It is believed that this vessel has been involved.

 

On this day in1991, Type 42 Destroyer HMS Gloucester destroyed an Iraqi Silkworm missile bound for USS Missouri with her Sea Dart missile system during Op. Granby. The first Gulf War.

On this day in 2011 whilst en route from the Gulf to HMNB Devonport for disposal, the Type 22 Frigate HMS CUMBERLAND was diverted to Libya to evacuate 454 personnel (129 Brits) fleeing the unrest. The evacuees were transported to safety in Malta.

HMS Sutherland of the passing under the Forth Bridge, near Edinburgh Scotland. She was returning from escorting the Royal Navy's newest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth for her first sea trials. HSwMS John Ericsson was the lead ship of the John Ericsson-class monitors built for the Royal Swedish Navy in the mid-1860s. She carried a pair of smoothbore 15-inch (380 mm) Dahlgren muzzleloaders in her turret. Each gun weighed approximately 42,000 pounds (19,000 kg) and fired 440-pound (200 kg) solid shot and a 330-pound (150 kg) explosive shell. The massive shells took 5-6 minutes to reload.

 

On this day in 1963, the first operational Buccaneer squadron, 801 NAS, embarked in HMS ARK ROYAL. The Buccaneer was the Royal Navy Maritime Strike aircraft designed for the cold war and would serve until the late 70's when its mantle passed to the Sea Harrier.
