German submarine U-462 was a Type XIV supply and replenishment U-boat ("Milchkuh") of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She served, first as part of the 4th U-boat Flotilla while carrying out training, then as part of the 10th and 12th flotillas while taking part in operations. U-462 conducted eight patrols. As a supply boat, she avoided combat. She did not leave the Bay of Biscay, being attacked by Mosquito aircraft of 151 and 156 squadrons, RAF on 21 June 1943. One man was killed and four more were wounded. She had barely cleared the northwest Spanish coast when she was attacked by a British B-24 Liberator of 224 squadron, RAF. After sustaining sufficient damage to force a return, she entered Bordeaux harbour on 6 July 1943. On 30 July 1943, U-462 was sunk by a British Halifax bomber of 502 Squadron RAF and gunfire from the British Black Swan-class sloops HMS Wren, Kite, Woodpecker, Wild Goose and Woodcock, in the Bay of Biscay. One of these ships, Kite, registered a hit at 13,050 yd (11,930 m). One crewman was killed; the other 64 survived.

This morning HMS Albion docked in Tripoli, the first visit by the Royal Navy to Libya in 8 years.According to the British Embassy in the country, the ship crew is looking forward to a great day with their Libyan Navy counterparts.

The Navy accepted delivery of the future USS Cooperstown (LCS 23) at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin Sept. 20.The ship is the 12th Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) designed and delivered by the Lockheed Martin-led industry team. Delivery marks the official transfer of the ship from the shipbuilder to the Navy. Following delivery, the ship will sail away for a commissioning ceremony in New York City before transiting to its homeport in Mayport, Florida.

On this day in 1977, Devonport MP, Dr David Owen opened the Leander Refit Complex, now Frigate Support Complex in HMNB Devonport. The structure covers 3 dry docks and has been a Plymouth landmark ever since.

The United States’ first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN-571), is scheduled to reopen to the public in Groton, Connecticut, Sept. 9. Before closing in 2021, USS Nautilus (SSN-571) served as an exhibit at the Submarine Force Museum that allowed patrons to embark on the only nuclear submarine open to the public. During the scheduled closure, Nautilus received $36 million in refurbishments and preservation maintenance.


 

RIGA, Latvia - The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) arrived in Riga, Latvia for a scheduled port visit.



 

Babcock International, the defence company has started a post-life extension (LIFEX) on the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll at Babcock Devonport’s Facility. It is the first Type 23 to begin its post-LIFEX upkeep, adopting a new innovative approach to re-certification at the Frigate Support Centre (FSC). Babcock will be overhauling key equipment and carrying out design changes for new capabilities such as communications upgrades and mixed crewing. The Duke Class frigate will also receive a full spray coat on the outer bottom and ship side.

On this day in 1998, the last of Royal Navy Trident SSBN submarines, HMS Vengeance, is rolled out of the Devonshire Dock Hall at Barrow. She and her sisters will be replaced by the Dreadnaught submarines in next decade.
