On this day in 1963, USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) entered Sydney to participate in events marking the 21st anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea for which she was named. Over 100,000 Australians took advantage of the opportunity to tour the Midway-class carrier while she was in port.

HMS Aeneas in 1972 was equipped with an innovative SLAM (Submarine-Launched Airflight Missile) of the type MANPADS Shorts Blowpipe From 4 to 6 missiles available. HMS AENEAS was hired by Vickers in 1972 for successful trials of SLAM (Submarine Launched Anti-Aircraft Missile), a system using a cluster of four Shorts Blowpipe missiles on an extendable mast, allowing attacks against low flying aircraft while the submarine was at periscope depth. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Washington, January 25 1990, laid up at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility are the guided missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 32), the guided missile destroyer USS Decatur (DDG 31) and the destroyer USS Turner Joy (DD 951). In the background at left is the attack aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31).

USS Planter, a Confederate side-paddlewheel steamer stolen by Robert Smalls, a slave and the ships' helmsman. While the captain was off ship, Smalls cast off and steamed past several rebel forts until reaching the Union blockading fleet where he surrendered the ship, becoming a free man.
