The Navy's baby flattop USS Nahenta Bay is heeled over at its berth at the Bethlehem Shipyards in East Boston after it broke away from its moorings during the height of the 100 mile per hour hurricane Carol that swept over the northeast mainland. Being refitted after having been taken out of mothballs for return to service, the vessel heeled over at a 15 degree angle and got stuck in the mud. A huge dockside gantry crane (left) toppled down atop the flattop and was wrecked.
