OnThisDay 1988, HMS SOUTHAMPTON was seriously damaged in a collision with the MV Tor Bay in the Persian Gulf. She was only 7 years old at the time, and after recovery to the UK she was rebuilt by Swan Hunter re-entering Royal Navy service in 1991. She served a further 18 years.
