Seen below are Harriers and various different helicopters packaged up onboard SS Atlantic Conveyor during her journey to the Falkland Islands, 1982.

At the bow of the ship, you can see the helicopter/ landing pad that made the ship very useful, being able to both transport and also launch/recover harriers with minimal fuel and no weapons as well as helicopters

SS Atlantic Conveyor was a ship taken up from commercial use by the Royal Navy in order to transport Harriers and other aircraft to the South Atlantic to replace tho that were shot down

The jets were walled in and protected on both sides by shipping containers, each carrying vital supplies to the task force whilst slowing the damage to the aircraft from the elements during the journey

SS Atlantic Conveyor was hit by 2 stray Exocet Missiles with the loss of 12 of her crew on the 25th of May and sunk under tow on the 28th of May

Whether or not the missiles warheads exploded or not is unknown, however due to the amount of fuel and ammunition carried on board, the attack caused an uncontrollable fire storm that raced through the ship. Witness Prince Andrew said that debris from the explosions could be seen falling a quarter of a mile away When the fire finally burnt out, the ship was boarded, however nothing of note was salvageable

All but 1 of the Wessex and Chinook helicopters were lost during this event, which caused significant logistical problems for the British, especially trying to move men and Artillery pieces across the Islands

Fortunately no Harriers were onboard or lost during this incident.
