On this day in 1939, Commodore Harwood, in HMS AJAX engaged the ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE at the Battle of the River Plate with HMS EXETER and HMS ACHILLES. The action caused GRAF SPEE to enter Montevideo in Uruguay for repairs but she scuttled believing superior Royal Navy forces were waiting.
