On this day in1856, HMS Resolute, which was abandoned in the Arctic after a failed mission to find HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, was found by a US Whaler. She was returned to UK by USA. When she paid off in 1879 Queen Victoria had a desk made which was presented to USA and is the desk in Oval Office.
