On this day, 80 years ago, at the 2nd Battle of the Java sea, the Allies were defeated by the Japanese allowing Japan to complete its conquest of the Dutch East Indies. The last ships, HMS EXETER (Of River Plate fame), USS POPE and HMS ENCOUNTER were lost in the action.
