On this day in 1954 experimental submarine HMS Explorer was launched at Barrow. With her sister HMS Excalibur they were designed to test a new High Test Hydrogen Peroxide Engine which proved too problematic and dangerous and was abandoned when the small nuclear reactor was developed.
