On this day,20 years ago in 2002 the first Royal Navy purpose built Landing Platform Dock and last steam powered surface ship, HMS FEARLESS, entered HMNB Portsmouth for the final time.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
