On this day in 1947 the Royal Navy detonated the largest non-atomic explosion in history when they set off 7,000 tons of unused WWII explosives on the German island of Heligoland. The charges were fired by Lt Cdr Mildred in HMS LASSO, 9 miles away on the 4th pip of the 1300 BBC time signal
