On this day in 1787 Captain Arthur Phillip in HMS SIRIUS, left Spithead off Portsmouth for Botany Bay with the first convict convoy. He eventually landed at Port Jackson & established a penal colony in what would become Sydney, named after British Home Secretary in New South Wales.
