On this day in 1942,the British Troop Ship, RMS Laconia, was sank in the Atlantic by U-156. Laconia was carrying over 2,700 souls, many of which were Italian POWs. U-156 stopped to rescue survivors but was attacked by a US Bomber and dived to prevent her sinking. Over 1700 were lost.
