The damaged U.S. Navy heavy cruiser USS New Orleans (CA-32) entering Tulagi harbour about eight hours after the Battle of Tassafaronga, 1 December 1942. Everything ahead of turret No. 2 is missing after being hit by a single torpedo which exploded her forward magazines. The crew of the cruiser even used coconut logs to keep afloat their ship, which lost its bow in the Battle of Tassafaronga. The ship was saved after traveling more than 2,000 km to Australia where it was repaired.
