On this day in 1978 the Fleet Carrier HMS Ark Royal entered HMNB Devonport for the final time following her WESTLANT deployment, to pay off. Her anchors were preserved and can be seen in Plymouth City Centre and Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

Nearly all major surface combatants (7/8 frigates) of one of Latin America's most capable, professional, and modern Navies, the Armada Chile, are included in this photo, including the Type 22 Batch 2 frigate Almirante Williams ex HMS Sheffield, and 3 Type 23 frigates, ex HMS Norfolk, Marlborough and Grafton.

Today in 1999, HMS Bangor was commissioned. She was the last RN Ship to be accepted in the 20th Century. Of the 12 RN Sandown Class Minehunters built only BANGOR remains in service as mine-hunting moves towards autonomous vessels from mother ships.
