Laid down in May of 1934, USS Yorktown (CV-5) would be the third ship to carry the name and would be commisioned just three years later in 1937, just two years before the official start of World War II. During her service in the war, she would actively play a role in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the critical Battle of Midway. Thought her aircraft would do damage to multiple ships during the Battle of Midway, she herself would unfortunately never get to see the end of the war, as she was sunk on June 7th, 1942 by enemy Japanese forces. To honor her, a ship from the Essex-class of aircraft carriers, that was intended to be named "Bon Homme Richard," was renamed to USS Yorktown and given the identification number (CV-10).
