88 years ago, in 1935, marked the end of the US Navy's airship era when USS MACON ZRS5 crashed in a storm off the California coast killing 2 sailors. Conceived as fleet scouts, MACON and AKRON ZRS4 carried fighters internally. Marvelous yet tragically flawed concept.
