On this day 40 yrs ago in 1983, the Navy’s newest Minehunter HMS Brocklesby collided with the Minesweeper HMS Nurton off Portland. The damage to HMS Nurton was severe causing most of the crew to abandon to HMS Brocklesby. HMS Nurton was recovered by tug to Portland, there were no casualties. Brocklesby still serving, (3rd oldest ship in the RN), whilst Nurton was disposed of in 1995.
