OnThisDay 1971 Britain’s first nuclear powered submarine, HMS Dreadnought, becomes the first Royal Navy nuclear submarine to reach the North Pole. HMS Dreadnought remains in Rosyth awaiting disposal.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
