USS Skate (SSN 578) surfaced at the North Pole, on this day in 1959, interring the ashes of famed polar explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins. The ceremony was part of Skate's second arctic voyage, after she became the first submarine to surface at the North Pole in August 1958.
