On this day in 1988, USS Bonefish (SS-582) was forced to the surface where the crew abandoned the sub because of an intense fire in the battery compartment. 89 men were rescued by USS Carr and USS John F. Kennedy, but three sailors died. The Navy decided to scrap the Bonefish due to the extent of the damage.
