On this day 80 years ago in 1943, the Royal Navy River Class Frigate HMS SWALE sank U-657 off Cape Farewell, Greenland, using depth charges and the Hedgehog Anti-submarine mortar, seen here. Ships like SWALE were crucial to keeping the UK fed and supplied during WW2.
