On this day in 1987, USS Stark (FFG-31) was struck by two Iraqi Exocet air-to-ground missiles while on patrol in the Persian Gulf. The attack killed 37 American Sailors and wounded another 21. It was the deadliest assault on a U.S. Navy ship since the Vietnam War.
