On this day in1966, HMS ULSTER, who damaged her stern, received the 25 ton entire stern section of her sister URCHIN in dock HMNB Devonport. The amazing engineering task which included machinery & steering gear took only 2 hours! ULSTER was ready to sail soon after.

Fletcher-class destroyer USS Jenkins (DD-447). Jenkins was everywhere during WW2, earning 14 Battle Stars. She later earned another during Korea. Then spent time providing fire support for the Marines in Vietnam. Finally decommissioned in 1969.

Navy struggling to keep RFA Fort Victoria operational. RFA Fort Victoria, the UK’s only vessel capable of providing solid stores logistic support to the Carrier Strike Group has been non-operational since late 2021 with mechanical and crewing issues putting a question mark over her future. Fort Vic returned to the UK from the CSG21 deployment in mid-December 2021. She had served as a key component of the group, conducting 44 replenishments at Sea, transferring 27,000 tonnes of fuel and 350 tonnes of ammunition, food and spares. She also hosted three Merlin Mk4 helicopters of 845 Naval Air Squadron and conducted 635 deck landings.

Northrop Grumman Delivers Fourth Triton to U.S. Navy for Initial Operational Capability.

Northrop Grumman Corporation delivered the fourth multi-intelligence MQ-4C Triton to the U.S. Navy ahead of initial operational capability (IOC) this year. The delivery completes the set of aircraft for Unmanned Patrol Squadron (VUP) 19’s establishment of the first operational orbit, while a second orbit is preparing for delivery this summer. With three orbits planned around the globe, the Triton multi-intelligence uncrewed aircraft will provide 24/7 unprecedented maritime awareness.

Munro, the only Coast Guardsman to be awarded the Medal of Honor. The US Navy destroyer escort USS Douglas A. Munro was also named for Munro.


 

One of the Royal Navy's busiest destroyers is heading for refit... After sailing the equivalent of 12 times around the world, the curtain has been brought down on the first act of HMS Defender's career ahead significant upgrades over the next two years. RN confirms Defender will also receive the Sea Ceptor missile system during her refit in Portsmouth. She will also have the engine upgrade (PIP). In her 1st decade, Defender sailed more than 300,000 nautical miles and had the best availability of any Type 45 destroyer. More importantly, ship's company ate 42km of sausages and 4 x the 8,500-tonne destroyer’s weight in baked beans.

On this day in 1961, the first Leander Class Frigate, HMS Leander, was launched at Harland & Wolff, Belfast. The class of 26 were a huge success and would serve the Royal Navy until the 1990s. The last British Leander was still in service with the Indian navy until 2012.

On this day, 30 years ago, USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) launches nine Tomahawks from the northern Arabian Gulf, and USS Peterson (DD 969) fires 14 more missiles from the Red Sea, in a coordinated night attack against the Iraqi intelligence service headquarters building in Baghdad.

HMS_Forth, 3rd of the Batch II OPVs received the dazzle paint scheme during refit in Gibraltar. Cold moved in the harbour this morning. Will eventually return to the Falkland Islands to relieve HMS_Medway, and resume her patrol ship duties.



 

HMS Victorious will undergo a major refit in Devonport before returning to patrols as one of the UK's continuous at-sea deterrent nuclear submarines. The maintenance programme will see her modernised and sustain 1,000 jobs in the south west.

Ex-HMS Cromer, former Sandown Class Minesweeper, arrived in Portsmouth last week, used as Static Training Vessel Hindostan at Dartmouth Brittania Royal Naval College. She is being stored temporarily in Portsmouth while Jetties are being refurbished at Dartmouth.




 

On this day in 1966 the first Royal Navy F4-K Phantom made its first flight at the McDonnell Douglas factory in St. Louis. The Phantom would become the FAA interceptor throughout the 70s until HMS Ark Royal was retired. You can still see the exact same aircraft on display Fleet Air Arm Museum.
