One of the Royal Navy's busiest destroyers is heading for refit... After sailing the equivalent of 12 times around the world, the curtain has been brought down on the first act of HMS Defender's career ahead significant upgrades over the next two years. RN confirms Defender will also receive the Sea Ceptor missile system during her refit in Portsmouth. She will also have the engine upgrade (PIP). In her 1st decade, Defender sailed more than 300,000 nautical miles and had the best availability of any Type 45 destroyer. More importantly, ship's company ate 42km of sausages and 4 x the 8,500-tonne destroyer’s weight in baked beans.
