On this day in 1940, Churchill ordered Vice Admiral Somerville to destroy the French Fleet based at Mers-el-Kebir, Oran, Algeria. Churchill said it was one of the most disagreeable tasks an RN admiral had been faced with, but these ships could not be allowed to fall to enemy hands.
