The flaw in the Littoral Response Group concept was always the lack of available escorts. RFA Argus (left) sails from Gibraltar on 15th October carrying 3 Merlin Mk4 helicopters while a company of Royal Marines is embarked on RFA Lyme Bay (right).

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
