The I newspapers report suggests one of the reasons for low availability of submarines , listing shortage of [reactor] 'cooling valves' and a general widespread shortage of naval spares.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
