On this day in 1939, Commodore HH Harwood in HMS AJAX, engaged ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE at the Battle of the River Plate with HMS EXETER and HMS ACHILLES. The action caused GRAF SPEE to enter Montevideo in Uruguay for repairs but she scuttled believing superior forces were waiting.
