80 Years ago the River Class Frigate, HMS Tweed is sunk by U-Boat with the loss of 83 men (44 survivors). HMS Tweed was employed in the Atlantic as part of Op STONEWALL to intercept blockade runners in to German occupied France.

On this day in 1949, USS Norton Sound (AV-11) successfully fired a Republic-Ford LTV-N-2 Loon guided-missile off Point Mugu, California. This is the first guided-missile launch conducted by the USN.


 

The SNLE Le Vigilant has joined basin 8 of the Brest BN for the continuation of its maintenance and modernization work. A major maintenance project which will renew its operational potential for the next 10 years.

Autonomous mine hunting operations have a taken a step forward thanks to the hard work and efforts of RN MTXG's Mission System Team 3. They have spent the past 12 months running trials and ops on the Clyde to test a range of new equipment and tech.


 

On this day in 1989 the Royal Navy announced the end of the issue of Blue Liner duty free cigarettes, phased out by 1991. Sailors were entitled to 300/month & could take 200 on leave or 25 overnight which they drew from stores on the production of a stamp. Today smoking at sea is banned.

Britain needs to review the size and reach of its armed forces, a senior member of the US administration has warned, as the world becomes increasingly dangerous with conflicts in multiple arenas. The US navy secretary said during a visit to London that more investment should be considered for the Royal Navy and it may also be necessary to strengthen the Army.
