HMS Illustrious (R06) relieves HMS Invincible (R05) off the Falkland Islands on August 28, 1982. Sea Harriers of 809 Naval Air Squadron and Sea King helicopters of 814 Naval Air Squadron are embarked on Illustrious.

In 1983, the destroyer USS Fife (DD-991) was slightly damaged in a collision with a Soviet frigate that was attempting to approach USS Ranger (CV-61) in the Arabian Sea. The captain of the Razyaschy claimed he signaled that his ship's steering had failed, but the U.S. Navy stated it was a common excuse used by the Soviets to get close to other vessels.
