20 NATO Allies, more than 50 ships, 85+ aircraft, and approximately 9,000 personnel kicked off the 53rd iteration of the annual exercise Baltic Operations BALTOPS24 yesterday, during the pre-sail conference kick-off event in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

On this day in 1994, USS Eisenhower (CVN-69) left Norfolk loaded with 58 Army helicopters and 2000 soldiers to take part in Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. It would be the largest Army air operation from an aircraft carrier since the Doolittle Raid in 1942.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
