On this day in 1940 during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France, the White Star Liner Lancastria is sunk by the Luftwaffe. She had thousands of troops onboard and is the UK's worst maritime disaster. Loss of life was more than 3000 and maybe as high as 6000.
