On August 6th, 1958: USS Seawolf (SSN 575) got underway to demonstrate "the ability of the nuclear-powered submarine to remain independent of the earth's atmosphere for the period of a normal war patrol", setting a 60-day submerged record.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
