On this day in 1958, USS Skate circumnavigated the globe in 50 minutes. To accomplish this remarkable feat, the sub took a shortcut by sailing on a circular course within two miles of the North Pole. The Skate only needed to travel 12 miles to pass through all of the world's time zones.
