Yesterday, the wreck of the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Hawke, was found, lost after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-9 on 15 October 1914, off the coast of Aberdeen. This is a nationally important find - 524 sailors died and only 74 survived.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
