In September 1951, HMS Unicorn became the first aircraft carrier to conduct a shore bombardment when she used her four twin-mount QF 4-inch Mk XVI dual-purpose guns to shell North Korean coast watchers at Chopekki Point.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
