Now all retired from USN service, the Oliver Hazard Perry-class were simple and effective frigates built in large numbers between 1977-89. The design was exported to several global navies with many still active. ( Photo USS Thatch, 2009).

On this day in 1984, the crew of the Soviet freighter SS Bratstvo was forced to abandon ship in the Strait of Gibraltar due to flooding. The crew initially believed that there had been an explosion in the engine room but it was soon learned that Bratstvo had been holed in a collision with the Victor I-class submarine K-53. K-53 suffered a severely damaged bow and had to go to Tunisia for urgent repairs. Bratstvo was towed to Spain where it was scrapped.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
