This day in 1944, Corvette HMCS Shawinigan was attacked and sunk by a U-Boat in the Cabot Strait, off Canada with the loss of all 85 crew members.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
