Today in 1997 HMY Britannia sailed for her last voyage, from London to HMNB Portsmouth to be decommissioned after 43 years of service to the nation.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
