On 6th January, in 1945, USS Mississippi (BB-41) was hit by a kamikaze during the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf. While en route to Pearl Harbor for repairs, the skipper developed a plan to upgrade the guns and add more A.A. weapons to all available deck space. The plan was so practical that the Navy was able to quickly implement it. The Mississippi returned to service three months later with a 300% increase in firepower.
The 7th Astute-class submarine is to be named HMS Achilles, as approved by The King. The name is appropriate in light of the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day. Six ships have previously borne the name, earning six battle honours, including the River Plate and Okinawa. In a surprising announcement on Sunday evening, the Royal Navy announced their name change.

In 1983, the destroyer USS Fife (DD-991) was slightly damaged in a collision with a Soviet frigate that was attempting to approach USS Ranger (CV-61) in the Arabian Sea. The captain of the Razyaschy claimed he signaled that his ship's steering had failed, but the U.S. Navy stated it was a common excuse used by the Soviets to get close to other vessels.
Refit costs for HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark were revealed. In response to a parliamentary question from Mark Francois, Conservative MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has disclosed the costs associated with refits for amphibious assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark since 2010. Maria Eagle, Minister of State for Defence, provided the figures, stating: “The total cost of refits to HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark since 2010 is £132.7 million. This excludes HMS Bulwark’s 2022-2025 refit, which was estimated to cost £72.1 million.”The case of HMS Bulwark is particularly notable. The vessel’s planned refit, intended to extend its operational life, was halted when the ship was retired before the work was completed. Eagle added: “As HMS Bulwark was retired before her refit was completed, the refit costs are under review.”
